Electromyogram (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Study (NCS):

An EMG measures and records electrical activity from teh muscles and nerves.  Small needles are inserted into the muscle and mild electrical shocks are given to stimulate the nerve.  This may be helpful in determining the cause of pai, numbness, tingling or weakness in the muscles or nerves.

 

A nerve conduction study is part of a comprehensive nerve and muscle diagnostic test.  NCS determines how well individual nerves can transmit electrical signals.  Nerves are stimulated with electrodes placed on the skin resulting in electrical activity recorded by other electrodes and used to calculate the nerve conduction velocity.
